Why Do We Get Sugar Cravings?

Whether it’s when we’re shopping or around the house or office, sugary treats are everywhere. While they’re fine in moderation, too many sweets are bad, as we all know.

But why do we sometimes crave them?

4 Reasons Why You Crave Sugar

If you know why you’re craving sugar, you’re going to be more likely to beat your cravings… So, check out these 4 reasons you might be craving sugar, and this advice on how to beat those pesky cravings.

1) You Ate Too Much Carbs, and Not Enough Fat/Protein

Carbs are converted to sugar by your body. If you fill up on a big bowl of pasta or rice, you’re going to experience a glucose spike, then a crash. This will leave you craving more sugar.

Make sure you balance your carbs out with plenty of protein and healthy fats.

2) You Made Eating Sugar Into a Habit

Always have a Starbucks muffin around lunchtime? A chocolate bar after dinner? You could’ve simply formed a habit!

Try to replace that habit with a healthier one to eliminate it easily!

3) You Just Ate a Lot of Salt

Consuming a lot of salt causes many people to crave something sweet. And a lot of the processed and pre-packaged foods we eat these days contain a lot of salt: it makes them taste good and acts as a preservative.

If you limit your salt intake a bit, you may find yourself craving sugar less.

4) You Didn’t Eat Enough

Sugar is fast energy. If you’re really hungry, your brain tells you to get energy fast. One minute you’re feeling super hungry, the next you’ve bought a chocolate bar without even thinking!

So, make sure you’re eating plenty: don’t wait till you’re starving!

Good Luck Out There!

Totally get most of us are go overboard with sweets every so often. (I’ve got a massively sweet tooth, so I know I do.)

Just use the advice above to stay on top of your sugar intake a bit.
